Hello, optometry family! As the co-founder of Eyecare Republic, I’m thrilled to share the real-life stories that inspired Dr. Justin Weigel and me to launch an alliance group built for optometrists, by optometrists. Many of you have faced the same frustrations we have — moments that spark a chuckle, a sigh, or even a tear. These experiences, drawn from the trenches of clinical practice, highlight the need for a new approach to collaboration in optometry.

Welcome to the first chapter of our journey, where we expose the absurdities of corporate optometry and invite you to join us in rewriting the narrative.

Chapter 1: The Contact Lens Rebate Rollercoaster; Share-Based vs. Growth

We’ve all danced to the tune of share-based contact lens rebate programs. You know the drill: Boost one manufacturer’s fitting percentage to unlock their “exclusive” deal. The pitch is simple — fit X percent of their lenses, and a juicy rebate lands in your pocket. It’s a tantalizing promise, right? But what about those near misses when you fall short by 5 percent, 1 percent, or even a razor-thin 0.1 percent? The brutal truth is that the house comes out ahead every single time.

A Tale of Two Optometrists (Names Changed to Protect the Innocent)

Picture this: It’s 2017, and Dr. Justin Weigel and I are deep in the grind with an alliance group we’ll call “Optic Ventures” (names altered to keep the peace). Our mission? Chase the elusive share-based program of 50 percent market share needed to secure the maximum rebate on a major contact lens brand. With one month left in the quarter, we’re spinning and grinning, we’re going to make it!

We call our rep “Iris” for an update. “How’s our progress?” we ask, hopeful for a clear view through the corporate fog.
“You’re close, boys — keep those fits coming!” she replies, her enthusiasm as predictable as a Snellen chart.

So we double down, fitting lenses so fast and furious it would make DaVinci’s head spin, confident we’re on track.

One week to go. Another call to Iris. “How’s it looking?”
“You’re close — keep those fits coming!”

We push harder, prescribing with the intensity of our optometric forefathers.

One day left. Final check-in. “Iris, are we there?”
“You’re close — keep it up!”

Quarter four ends. We wait anxiously, like patients awaiting a dilated fundus exam, for the results. Weeks later, Iris delivers the news: “Guys, you won’t believe this — you hit 49.9 percent.”

Cue the celebration, right? Surely, no one would quibble over a tenth of a percent. We’re practically there! But corporate optometry, that unrelenting machine, had other plans. Our dreams of rebate glory were dashed. No rounding up, no mercy. We requested clarity, but our inquiries met the cold silence of an auto-reply email. Were the numbers fudged? Was there glee in our defeat? We’ll never know. What we do know is that the promised maximum rebate never saw the light of day.

Eyecare Republic: A New Vision

This saga, familiar to so many of you, is one scenario of many that fueled the creation of Eyecare Republic. Dr. Weigel and I co-founded this alliance to flip the script. To be clear, we love rebates; who doesn’t? But share-based programs that penalize you for missing by 0.1 percent are fundamentally flawed. Clear, concise, traceable rebate programs are what Eyecare Republic is about.

No more opaque schemes or corporate games that undermine our practices. Eyecare Republic is built on transparency, collaboration, and fairness — designed to empower optometrists to prioritize patient care over profit-driven corporate quotas. We’re taking these “scorned optometrist” stories, learning from them, and building a community where your expertise is valued and supported.

Join us in this movement. Share your own tales of corporate optometry woes, and let’s create an alliance that puts optometrists first. Together, we can ensure that the next chapter — whether it involves contact lenses, cutting-edge diagnostics or practice management — ends with a victory for us, not the machine.

In today’s optometry landscape, independent practitioners face intense competition from corporate giants, which dominate the market through vertically integrated business models. These large corporations control manufacturing, distribution, and retail, making it increasingly difficult for private practice optometrists to compete on pricing, convenience, and product availability.

Fortunately, e-commerce platforms such as Bausch + Lomb’s Opal are leveling the playing field by enabling independent optometrists to offer the same level of service, convenience, and product accessibility as their corporate counterparts.

Convenience and accessibility

One of the biggest advantages corporate giants have is their ability to provide seamless online ordering and fulfillment, making it easy for patients to purchase contact lenses and eyewear directly from their websites. Traditionally, independent optometrists have struggled to match this level of convenience. Platforms like Opal provide a digital storefront that integrates with a practice, allowing patients to reorder their contact lenses online while maintaining their relationship with their trusted eye care provider. This means independent practitioners remain the go-to source for vision care rather than losing patients to large retail chains or third-party online retailers.

Patient relationships

When patients purchase eyewear or contact lenses from corporate retailers, the connection with their primary eye care provider weakens. E-commerce solutions like Opal allow private optometrists to maintain control over their product offerings, ensuring that patients return to their practice for follow-up care, prescription updates, and future purchases.

By offering this kind of branded, user-friendly e-commerce experience, optometrists can reinforce their role as the primary provider of eye health services rather than just being a prescription source.

Competitive pricing without overhead costs

A significant challenge independent optometrists face is competing with the bulk pricing and aggressive discounts offered by major corporations. By utilizing an e-commerce platform like Opal, private practices can access competitive pricing on contact lenses and other optical products while reducing the overhead costs associated with in-office inventory management. Many of these platforms also offer direct-to-patient shipping, eliminating the need for optometrists to stock large quantities of products and allowing them to focus on patient care rather than logistics.

Strengthening practice profitability

By integrating e-commerce into their practice, optometrists can generate revenue beyond in-office visits and retail sales. Automated reordering, subscription models, and seamless payment processing encourage repeat business, creating a steady revenue stream that helps independent practices remain financially viable in an increasingly competitive market.

E-commerce platforms like Bausch + Lomb’s Opal empower independent optometrists to compete effectively against corporate giants. By offering convenience, patient retention, competitive pricing, and additional revenue streams, these platforms help level the playing field and ensure that private practice optometrists can continue providing personalized, high-quality eye care without being overshadowed by large-scale corporate entities.

Hello everyone, Dr. Neal Troyer here, co-founder of Eyecare Republic. Greetings from the exam lane! I want to extend a warm welcome to all our new members. We are rapidly growing and are excited to invite every optometrist who shares our vision for the future of optometry.

Addressing corporate dominance in optometry

So, why did we feel the need to create a doctor alliance group? My co-founder, Dr. Justin Weigel, and I have been part of many such groups and shared the common disappointment many of you might feel—that the corporate elites and conglomerates in optometry often prioritize their interests over those of individual practitioners, like you and me, in the exam rooms.

It became clear that if there wasn’t an alliance out there that truly represented our interests, we needed to build it ourselves. Eyecare Republic is for every optometrist who is in the trenches—those who long for the “good old days” when optometrists could sit down, peer-to-peer, and share best practices directly without corporate overtones.

Joining forces for a better future

Our goal is to collaborate using vendors and resources that align with our interests, supporting not just private or independent optometrists but any practitioner who feels that our profession may not be headed in the right direction. We believe in uniting our voices for a stronger, collective impact.

Reflecting on the past, nearly 20 years ago, if you asked any optometrist if they wanted their child to follow in their footsteps, the answer would invariably be yes. Unfortunately, that sentiment has dwindled, which we believe is due to the overbearing influence of the larger players in our field who are too involved in controlling the profession.

At Eyecare Republic, we are saying “no more.” We are an organization for doctors, by doctors, dedicated to ensuring our profession remains in the hands of those who practice it day in and day out. I encourage all of you to visit our website at Eyecare Republic to learn more about what we stand for.

Remember, joining is currently free, and it will always include a no-cost option. We are primarily an alliance for private and independent eye care practitioners, but anyone who desires a better future for optometry is welcome to join. Our strength is in our numbers, and together, our voices will be heard and make a difference.
